Where nightlife is concerned, St. Petersburg has changed a great deal in recent years: today, even Paris and Rome would find it almost impossible to compete with its bustling streets in summer.

Sights of St. Petersburg

Splendid palaces, magnificently shimmering facades on the houses, curved bridges, gold-plated domes and towers radiate the former splendour and pomp of the city, giving it its unique charm at the same time.

The tsars built summer residences of truly imperial architecture on the outskirts of St. Petersburg. The magnificent park and castle ensemble bears witness to the wealth of the Russian emperors and to their insatiable lust for pomp and splendour. If you visit Saint Petersburg, you absolutely must include a visit to one of the tsars residences. Probably the most famous and the most beautiful are Petergof and Pushkin.

The Palace Square

The Palace Square is the biggest and most impressive square and also something of an architectural jewel in the crown of Russias northern metropolis. To the north, the square is adorned by the former tsars residence, the breathtakingly beautiful baroque Winter Palace built by the Italian architect Rastrelli. To the south is the classicist General Staff of the Russian Army and Ministries Building with its Triumphal Arch, designed by the architect Carlo Rossi.

Arts Square

If you walk down the little side road off the Nevskiy Prospect at the Grandhotel Europa, the Michailovskaya Uliza, you will arrive at the lovely Arts Square. The square is notable for its delightfully arranged trees and gardens. In the middle of Arts Square stands a statue of the famous Russian writer Alexander Pushkin. On the northern side is the Mikhailovsky Palace, which houses the Russian Museum.

Osrovsky Square

This square is situated on the Nevskiy Prospect between the Gostiny Dvor department store and the Anichkov Palace. At the heart of the square is the statue of Catherine the Great, unveiled during her lifetime in 1773, in the garden outside the Alexandrinsky Theatre. The seats around the square are usually occupied by tourists and walkers who like to come here to relax and chat. The southern part of the square is adorned by Carlo Rossis magnificent classicistic masterpiece, the Alexandrinsky Theatre. The famous and impressive Rossi Street ends outside the theatre.
